Off the Grid...
Do you ever wish you could go back to the days before cell phones and computers? It's amazing to think of all the technological advances over the last 20 years but it's also very overwhelming. Sometimes I just want to take my phone and throw it out the window. But then I realize that I have no other way to contact anyone and I quickly change my mind. The other day I was out shopping and I mentioned to Joe (my husband???) that we should meet for dinner at Cafe Rio. Well after a few minutes I noticed that my phone had just died. Do I go home or do I head to Cafe Rio? I didn't want to assume that Joe would just know to meet us there...but I did say that was the plan. I sat in the parking lot wondering what I should do. I didn't have a charger or know of a pay phone anywhere. Even if I found a pay phone I didn't have a quarter. It was a crazy feeling to be caught without a phone! I hate being that dependent on something. But that is life as we know it!
Do you ever get annoyed when you send a text and the person doesn't respond right away? But at that exact moment you probably have 10 messages in your feed that you forgot to reply to? I heard someone on the radio saying that he went outside to talk to a neighbor and told his family he would be outside. He left his phone and wallet at home. Well he ended up talking to another neighbor a few houses down for an hour or so. When he got home everyone was going crazy because they didn't know where he was and they couldn't get a hold of him. Did they think to just go outside where he said he would be? We are a little too dependent on our phones and knowing where someone is 24/7...more like 24 hours a day, 60 minutes per hour, and 60 seconds per minute. People seem to want to know what your are doing every second of the day!!!
I think we all need to set some boundaries before things get worse. If someone takes a day or two to reply to a text, don't freak out! Don't contact their doctor to see if they are still alive! Maybe we should all get rid of our cell phones and go back to just having a land line. Now that would be interesting!!!!!!!
